As spring approached, I found myself craving sunshine, sea, and a change of scenery. After some research and helpful recommendations from friends, I chose Cyprus over Malta for a short yet unforgettable getaway. From booking the perfect hotel to exploring the vibrant cities of Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Limassol, and Nicosia, this trip checked all the boxes – and then some.
Choosing the Destination: Why Cyprus?
My initial plan was to travel somewhere warm enough for a potential swim. Cyprus quickly became a top contender thanks to its mild climate and rich culture. Though there are no direct flights from Skopje, flying from Thessaloniki – just 250 km away by car – was an affordable and easy alternative. I booked a round-trip ticket for €75 (though prices started at €40, so booking early helps!).
Booking the Perfect Stay: Roseum Boutique Hotel, Larnaca
Using Booking.com, I prioritized accommodations close to both the beach and Larnaca’s city center. I stumbled upon Roseum Boutique Hotel, and the rave reviews about their breakfast sealed the deal. The hotel had excellent ratings for cleanliness, service, and location – and best of all, it included breakfast.
First Impressions & Warm Welcomes
After parking in Thessaloniki (€36 for the weekend), we boarded our short flight to Cyprus. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by warm air and the scent of the sea. The public transport was easy to navigate and affordable. While passing the salt lakes, we hoped to spot flamingos, but unfortunately, they had already left.
At Roseum Boutique Hotel, we were greeted by a smiling and genuinely kind lady who gave us quick tips on what to see and do. We told her the hotel’s breakfast reviews were what drew us in – and she seemed delighted. We settled in and headed straight out to explore the city.
Breakfast That Lives Up to the Hype
The next morning, we were welcomed once again by the same lovely lady and soon introduced to the head chef. We told him we had come for the food – and his surprise and appreciation made it all the more special. Delicious meals, friendly chats, and morning coffee moments made it clear: we had made the right choice.
Day Trips & Exploring: Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Limassol & Nicosia
Larnaca: Our base for this trip, and an absolute gem to explore. On our first day, we wandered through the charming old town streets, visited the iconic Holy Church of Saint Lazarus, strolled along the seafront promenade, and enjoyed refreshing cocktails at cozy beachfront cafes. Larnaca offered the perfect mix of history, beach life, and vibrant local culture – a wonderful welcome to Cyprus.
Ayia Napa: Stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a peaceful vibe (especially before the peak season). We ended the day at Hard Rock Café, enjoying unique burgers we hadn’t tried before.
Limassol: A modern, bustling city with a great seaside promenade. Though we set out to eat fish, we were swayed by a couple devouring massive meat platters. We followed our instincts – and the food was phenomenal.
Nicosia: Our final day took us to Cyprus’ capital. Though short on time, we explored the old town and approached the Turkish border (but avoided crossing due to long lines). We even found some great clothing deals and managed to fit a few items in our carry-on.
Cyprus Was the Right Choice
We returned home sun-kissed, smiling, and fulfilled. Cyprus delivered the perfect mix of culture, hospitality, delicious food, and unforgettable moments. If you’re looking for a short spring escape with plenty of charm and warmth, I highly recommend adding Cyprus to your travel list.
